The vulnerability of the 8th floor Control Room was seen as a major danger as the BBC got ready to go to war. A decision was made to move the Control Room, along with the telephone operators, down in to the core of the building in the sub-basement.
The
Vaudeville studio, initially known as studio BA, but later as studio S1,
was the area chosen. It had the benefit of a balcony to give extra space,
and was about as protected as one could get without building a bunker.
